India to protest border shooting

NEW DELHI, May 20 (UPI) -- The Indian army said it will lodge a strong protest with Pakistan over the shooting of an Indian soldier at the border dividing the two sectors of Kashmir.

The army said Pakistani soldiers opened fire at the Line of Control Monday, killing one Indian soldier. The shooting took place a day before Indian Foreign Minister Pranab Mukherjee reached Islamabad, the capital of Pakistan, to resume peace talks, local media reported Tuesday. It said the protest would be lodged during a flag meeting.

This was the second time in a week that Pakistani soldiers have opened fire from across the Line of Control, said a senior official from India's Defense Ministry -- the third, if the heavy firing on a Border Security Force post on the international border is taken into account.

He said the firing on the international border could be linked to militants, but the one at Tangdhar on the Line of Control had the markings of an organized force.

Pakistan initially denied the incident during a recent flag meeting on Tangdhar, but agreed to a probe after it was confronted with photographs of bullet marks on the Indian army post. Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh expressed concern over the incident.
