Iraq progressing on corruption measures

BAGHDAD, April 4 (UPI) -- The U.N. Mission in Iraq said in its latest quarterly report that Iraq made progress in counter-terrorism and anti-corruption measures.

UNAMI highlighted the first anti-corruption conference in Baghdad attended by the top UNAMI official, Staffan de Mistura, as well as Iraqi Deputy Prime Minister Barham Saleh.

UNAMI said the Iraqi government embarked on the ratification process for the U.N. Convention against Corruption during the conference and pledged its support for its principles, the mission said in a release.

The 2008 appeal for Iraqi aid by the United Nations generated a strategy to process its $265 million aid appeal for food, shelter, health and human-rights initiatives.

An additional $6.5 million would go for coordination and support of aid programs and for an emergency response fund.

The U.N. human-rights organization in Iraq organized a four-day seminar on counter-terrorism on best-practice methods on that front.

More than 80 people attended the seminar that concluded with agreements from the Iraqis to begin the ratification process for U.N. anti-terrorism provisions.
