Macedonia, Interpol meet to plan security

LYON, France, Jan. 9 (UPI) -- A top official from the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia recently met with Interpol officials to discuss increased border security cooperation.

Republic of Macedonia Minister Gordana Jankuloska met with Interpol Secretary-General Ronald Noble to discuss security issues including securing Macedonia's border, combating crime and defending against other potential threats.

"Law enforcement in any one country cannot hope to effectively combat crime and protect its borders without the assistance and support of their partners around the world and Interpol plays a key role in making this cooperation a reality," Jankuloska said in a statement.

"Facilitating the real time exchange of information globally on crimes such as illegal immigration, drugs trafficking and child abuse is vital which is why the government of the Republic of Macedonia is committed to continuing its cooperation with Interpol."

Officials say plans are currently under way to expand the Republic of Macedonia's access to Interpol's global databases among other security initiatives.

"The Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia recognizes that by working closely with Interpol it enhances the safety and security of its citizens and that by having its law enforcement officials working at Interpol's general secretariat, its country will be at the cutting edge of learning both about emerging transnational crime threats and ways to reduce their impact on its citizens," Noble said.
