Militants smuggling arms into India

NEW DELHI, Nov. 30 (UPI) -- India says militants are smuggling arms from across the border and across states within the country.

"Arms are being smuggled from across the borders and from one state to another within the country by militants and anti-national elements, including those active in Jammu and Kashmir and northeastern regions," Junior Interior Minister Sri Prakash Jaiswal told Indian Parliament Friday.

He said state governments have been urged to make a sustained and continued effort to unearth illegal weapons.

"Regular meetings are held with the representatives of the states to monitor and take stock of the situation," Jaiswal said in response to a question on the issue.

He said border management had been strengthened by the border fencing along the frontiers with Pakistan and Bangladesh.
