New UNAMI leader arrives in Iraq

BAGHDAD, Nov. 13 (UPI) -- The new United Nations special representative for Iraq has assumed leadership responsibilities in Baghdad.

Special Representative for Iraq, Staffan de Mistura, has arrived in Baghdad, taking over for Ashraf Qazi, the United Nations reported.

De Mistura, as Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon's new special representative for Iraq, will be the top U.N. envoy in the country as a result of the extended and expanded mandate of the U.N. Assistance Mission in Iraq as stated in Security Council resolution 1770.

According to the release, de Mistura pledged his work in Iraq would be in the service of the Iraqi people vowing "to fulfill UNAMI's mandate by ensuring maximum United Nations engagement with both the government and people of Iraq," de Mistura said.

"I look forward to carrying out my responsibilities," de Mistura said in a statement.

De Mistura has served in Iraq in various capacities including as U.N. Secretary-General Deputy Special Representative.
