USAF: No timeline to pick cyber command HQ

WASHINGTON, Oct. 26 (UPI) -- The Air Force secretary says he has no timeline for making a decision on where the new U.S. cyber-space military command will be based.

Testifying before the House Armed Services Committee this week, Secretary Michael Wynne was asked about a timeline for standing up the new command, and when a decision might be made on where it will be based.

Local officials from several communities, including Hampton, Va., have expressed an interest in hosting the headquarters of the new command, according to the Newport News, Va., Daily Press.

Wynne told Rep. Thelma Drake, R-Va., that the command was "just finding its legs," and that "We have not established a process to answer the questions that you have."

"I think I've given them until year end to come up with a process to allow this to happen," he said of establishing a headquarters. "We are at an interim state, and we will be following a process to determine what is the proper end state," he said at the hearing Wednesday.

Wynne said the command would in all likelihood be a virtual one, with a headquarters element perhaps just 180-strong, compared to 1,000-1,300 for the Air Force's conventional commands.
