Bush taps Boston lawyer for DHS GC job

WASHINGTON, Oct. 16 (UPI) -- President Bush nominated a Boston lawyer to be general counsel for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security Tuesday.

Gus Coldebella is currently the deputy general counsel at the department, a post he has held since October 2005. A former prosecutor with the Middlesex, Mass., district attorney’s office, Coldebella became a partner at Goodwin Procter LLP in Boston, from where he joined Homeland Security.

“Gus is an exceptional attorney and trusted adviser for me and the entire senior leadership team on the most complex and pressing issues that we face,” said Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff of the nomination.

Coldebella has been running the department’s general counsel’s office since February, when General Counsel Philip Perry resigned.

Chertoff said he had provided “steady and effective leadership.”

“I look forward to Gus’s quick confirmation by the Senate,” said Chertoff.
