BUENOS AIRES, April 21 (UPI) -- Argentina's last military president, Reynaldo Benito Bignone, will spend the rest of his life in prison for human rights abuses, a special tribunal has ruled.
Bignone, 82, who has been under house arrest, received a 25-year prison sentence after being found guilty of ordering illegal raids, kidnappings and the torture of political opponents during his dictatorship, the New York Times reported Wednesday.
Along with Bignone, the tribunal sentenced six other former military and police officials for their parts in running a concentration camp called Campo de Mayo.
Campo de Mayo was the largest of more than 300 detention centers that operated during the seven years Argentina was under military rule.
Bignone headed the Military School at Campo de Mayo before he took office as president, the Buenos Aires Herald reported.
Officials estimate some 13,000 people were killed during military rule although human rights groups say as many as 30,000 died.
