Hamas leader: Israel sends 'war signals'

DAMASCUS, Syria, Feb. 12 (UPI) -- An exiled Hamas leader living in Syria says if another war breaks out with Israel it would extend far beyond the Gaza Strip.

Khalad Mashaal, Hamas politburo chief, told Arab-language newspaper Al-Hayatn that Hamas doesn't want war but if it happens "we will resist the Zionist aggression," Israel's Ynetnews.com reports.

"Israel is not a source of peace and calm in the region," Mashaal said. "It sends war signals to Gaza and Lebanon and is even turning Syria against Iran."

Marsaal said he hoped the Arab and Palestinian message to Israel will clearly state that war is unacceptable.
