BRISTOL, England, Feb. 11 (UPI) -- A 60-year-old man who was in a coma for two weeks in Bristol, England, awoke after being told he had become a grandfather, his wife says.
Helen Russell said her husband, David, has been in a coma for weeks when she leaned over and whispered in his ear they had a grandchild named Edie, The Daily Mail reported Thursday.
Russell said doctors suspected her husband would not wake up from the induced coma following his 12-foot fall Dec. 6.
"He did survive but when he failed to come out of an induced coma they said the best case scenario was that he would be brain damaged and severely impaired," Russell said. "But then Edie was born and I went into the hospital and said: 'Come on granddad you have got to wake up now -- you have got to do that.'"
Russell, 57, said her husband soon began to come out of the coma and within weeks was well enough to meet his new granddaughter, born to their son Edward and his wife.
"It was just fantastic to meet Edie and I have got her to thank for saving my life," David Russell told the newspaper.
