HAMILTON, Ontario, Jan. 5 (UPI) -- Canadian police in Hamilton, Ontario, appealed Tuesday for information into who threw a Molotov cocktail into a mosque and school a day earlier.
Police were called to the Islamic School of Hamilton Monday morning around 8 a.m. when its principal, Zakir Patel, found a shattered brown bottle and a smoldering fire that had apparently burned itself out, The Hamilton Spectator reported.
Police also found a rock used to first smash the window. No one was injured and damage was estimated at $3,000, the report said.
Police Sgt. Terri-Lynn Collings told the Canwest News Service an attack on a place of worship is a hate crime and specialists in that area were investigating alongside arson detectives.
The mosque's front lobby windows were smashed with beer bottles by vandals after the U.S. terror attacks on Sept. 11, 2001, the newspaper said.
Hamilton is home to about 20,000 Muslims,The Spectator said.
