Royal Gorge fire burns 3,800 acres of land in Colorado

A wildfire burning in Royal Gorge Park in Colorado has burned over 3,800 acres of land, officials said Tuesday.

The fire, which reportedly started on the south side of the Arkansas River at 1p.m. on Tuesday, has destroyed three structures thus far. Authorities have not been able to verify the type of structures they were.

“This fire is not going away real soon. This fire is going to be burning for a number of days,” said Royal Gorge Fire Information Officer Gregg Goodland on Tuesday evening.

As of now the Royal Gorge Bridge has not been damaged by the blaze.

Firefighters from Canon City are working alongside the Bureau of Land Management and the US Forest Service to tame the flames.

The 125 firefighters at the scene are waiting for more resources that will help them contain the fire including two single-engine airtankers, one Type 1 hotshot crew, three hand crews and one Type 3 Incident Management Team.

U.S. Highway 50, the Temple Canyon and the Arkansas River have all been closed as the fire continues.
