March 17 (UPI) -- A yearly tradition since 1762, the St. Patrick's Day parade takes place Friday in New York City.
Starting at 44th Street and 5th Avenue, the parade route travels up to 79th Street past thousands of spectators.

Nearly 200,000 people are marching in this year's parade, with former U.S. Sen. George Mitchell serving as grand marshal.
