LOS ANGELES, Dec. 1 (UPI) -- Mudslides choked the Pacific Coast Highway this weekend leaving more than a dozen cars stranded after Southern California got a shot of much-needed rain. Residents in the nearby foothills communities are bracing for more as the rain continues.
The falling mud and rocks forced motorists to abandon 10 to 15 cars along the highway, the California Highway Patrol said. The National Weather Service said the rain is expected to continue through Wednesday, with some areas getting more than two inches.
California has been experiencing extreme drought conditions in 80 percent of the state. The last major rainfall in the area, in February, also sparked mudslides. Meteorologists say the rain and resulting mud and rockslides in the coming days could be as severe.
