MADRID, Oct. 7 (UPI) -- Spanish government officials said Monday that a nurse near Madrid has been diagnosed with the Ebola virus, making her the first person to be infected with the disease outside West Africa in the recent outbreak.

Spanish Health Minister Ana Mato said that the unnamed nurse had been caring for Spanish priests Manuel García Viejo, who contracted the disease in Sierra Leone and died in a Madrid hospital on September 25.

"We are working in coordination to give the best care to the patient and to guarantee the safety of all citizens," Mato said.

The nurse started to feel sick last week, but wasn't admitted to the hospital until Monday. She is now in stable condition.

Officials also said the nurse had contact with 30 healthcare workers who have been placed under observation for 21 days.

The Ebola outbreak is now the largest in history. It has claimed more than 3,400 lives, mainly in Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone.
