MARIANNA, Fla., Sept. 24 (UPI) -- A look at usually confidential records from the Dozier School for Boys in Marianna, Fla., adds weight to reports of abuse and neglect, observers say.
There are what appear to be verifying stories in the recently released investigative summaries from the Department of Children and Families over the past five years at Florida's oldest boys reform school. The data was kept away from the public until the St. Petersburg Times convinced a judge of the public's right to know.
One report tells of a guard coming to work high on marijuana and cocaine, another guard said to have ordered a group of juvenile offenders to jump another boy, and helped another guard who allegedly tied up one boy in a laundry bag and urged others to kick and punch him. There were also reports of several cases of inmate violence.
