Lawyer: Jaycee Dugard will testify

LOS ANGELES, Sept. 24 (UPI) -- Jaycee Lee Dugard, who spent 18 years hidden by the California man who allegedly kidnapped her as a child, will probably testify against him, her lawyer said.

MacGregor Scott told CBS News Dugard understands "some bad and terrible things were done to her."

"I'm confident in saying that, if this case does proceed to trial, Jaycee will, in all likelihood, be a witness for the prosecution," he said. "She's aware of that and understands that."

Phillip Garrido and his wife Nancy have been charged with abducting Dugard when she was 11 near her home in Lake Tahoe. Garrido allegedly held her as a sex slave at his home in Antioch near San Francisco and fathered two children by her.

Scott said Dugard, now 29, is recovering slowly from the long ordeal.

Ken Slayton, who says he is Dugard's father, made a statement Wednesday at his lawyer's office in Los Angeles, the Los Angeles Times reported. He said Dugard's mother, then a teenager, did not tell him she was pregnant.

"Now that she has been found, I want her to know that our hearts are open to her and we long to be the loving, supportive and normal family to her and her children that she has not had for 18 years," a tearful Slayton said.
