British A.G.'s maid arrested

LONDON, Sept. 24 (UPI) -- A Tongan woman fired from her job as a maid for the British attorney general was arrested Thursday as an illegal immigrant.

Police had been searching for Loloahi Tapui, 27, for a week, The Times of London reported.

Attorney General Patricia Scotland dismissed Tapui last week.

Border Police arrested Tapui and her husband, Alexander Zivancevic, a solicitor, in the London neighborhood of Chiswick. Both were granted bail.

Prime Minister Gordon Brown has supported Scotland through the scandal. The Times said Scotland not only employed an illegal immigrant but said she had not kept copies of the documents Tapui gave her when she was hired. The documents would have shown Scotland had checked Tapui's immigration status, the Times said.

The Border Police fined Scotland 5,000 pounds (almost $8,000).

Scotland backed a law penalizing employers for hiring illegal immigrants.
