U.S. Embassy in S. Africa to reopen Friday

PRETORIA, South Africa, Sept. 23 (UPI) -- U.S. diplomatic facilities in South Africa are expected to reopen Friday after being closed because of a terrorist threat, the State Department said Wednesday.

The U.S. Embassy in Pretoria, and consulates in Cape Town, Durban and Johannesburg closed Tuesday after authorities received "credible" information about a terrorist threat.

The U.S. facilities will be closed Thursday because it is a national holiday, State Department spokesman Ian Kelly said during a news briefing.

"(The) embassy, I'm told, expects to open for normal business Friday, September 25th," Kelly said in Washington.

"We've been working very closely with South African government authorities, and we are very appreciative of their support and cooperation as we've faced this issue," he said.

Embassy spokeswoman Sharon Hudson Dean told The Christian Science Monitor no threats were made against U.S. interests outside of South Africa.

"We are not discussing the information we have received, but it is just in South Africa," Dean said.
