Taliban leader dies in captivity

PESHAWAR, Pakistan, Sept. 20 (UPI) -- Taliban commander Sher Mohammad Qasab died Sunday from bullet wounds suffered during his arrest in Pakistan's Swat Valley, authorities said.

Qasab was injured and arrested by the Pakistani army Wednesday in a military operation that killed three of his sons and captured a fourth son.

"A team of army doctors was treating Sher Mohammad Qasab but he could not survive," said statement from the Pakistan army published in the Pakistani newspaper Dawn Sunday.

Qasab was one of the most senior Taliban leaders on a most wanted list in the Swat Valley, Dawn reported. He ruled the center of the mountainous northwest district, where the Pakistani army has focused much of its fighting since May.

Qasab was the third Taliban commander to be arrested in recent weeks, Dawn said. following the arrests of Muslim Khan and Mahmood Khan.
