NEW YORK, Sept. 16 (UPI) -- New York City Comptroller William Thompson won the Democratic primary Tuesday to become the party's candidate against Mayor Michael Bloomberg.
Thompson went on the attack against Bloomberg as soon as Councilman Tony Avella conceded, the New York Daily News reported.
"You told us you'd create jobs. But the fact is, unemployment in our city is at a 16-year high," Thompson said at a rally Tuesday night. "Mike, you told us over and over again that overturning term limits would be a disgrace. But the fact is, when it was in your best interests, you overturned the will of the voters and hijacked democracy. Eight is enough!"
Bloomberg, a Democrat-turned-Republican-turned Independent, got the city council to reverse a referendum limiting mayors to two full terms. An hour before Thompson's rally, the mayor held his own, where he said his opponent is playing "politics as usual."

Turnout was low with many polling places getting only a trickle of voters in the morning.
