PLACERVILLE, Calif., Sept. 14 (UPI) -- A California judge Monday set bail at $30 million for Phillip Garrido in the alleged 1991 kidnapping and rape of 11-year-old Jaycee Lee Dugard.

El Dorado County Judge Douglas Phimister called Garrido a flight risk and potential danger to the community and then approved a defense request for a psychiatric evaluation for the convicted sex offender.

Garrido's wife, Nancy, also appeared at the bail hearing. Both were shackled and clad in red jail jumpsuits, the Sacramento Bee, reported.

The Bay Area couple is charged with grabbing Dugard, who was 11 at the time, from her South Lake Tahoe neighborhood and holding her captive until last month.

Both defendants face charges of kidnapping and rape. Mrs. Garrido remained in custody without bail.
