Inquiry focuses on alleged MI6 torture

LONDON, Sept. 11 (UPI) -- British police are investigating allegations that an agent of the Secret Intelligence Service was involved in torture of a detainee, officials said Friday.

Attorney General Patricia Scotland requested the Metropolitan Police investigation, The Times of London reported.

Foreign Secretary David Miliband, who has responsibility for the SIS, usually known as MI6, said in a letter to the Conservative Party spokesman on foreign affairs that the agency referred the case to the attorney general "on its own initiative, unprompted by any accusation," the Times said.

MI6's domestic counterpart, the Security Service, or MI5, is already under investigation. MI5 was allegedly involved in questioning Binyan Mohamed, a native of Ethiopia living in Britain, before he was handed over for rendition to Morocco, where he said he was tortured by agents under the supervision of the CIA.

Government sources told the Times the MI6 investigation does not involve Mohamed.

"We're looking into the conditions under which a non-British citizen was detained and the potential involvement of British personnel," a Scotland Yard spokesman said. "The investigation is under way."
