LONDON, Sept. 7 (UPI) -- A British jury has convicted three men on charges of conspiracy to murder involving liquid bombs in a plot to attack multiple airliners.
The BBC said Monday that Abdulla Ahmed Ali, 28, Tanvir Hussain, 28, and Assad Sarwar, 29, were convicted of plotting to detonate homemade bombs disguised as drinks on board airplanes while flying over the Atlantic Ocean.
Four additional suspects in the terrorism case were found innocent on conspiracy to murder charges. Those individuals were identified as Ibrahim Savant, 28, Arafat Khan, 28, Waheed Zaman, 25, and Donald Stewart-Whyte, 23.
The men were all arrested in August 2006 and authorities accused the men of plotting to use a mixture of chemicals to bomb flights traveling from London to North America.
The BBC said the suspects alleged their plan had been to set off small explosions at airport as part of a political stunt.
"This has brought home to us how potentially vulnerable travel and communication is," former Joint Intelligence Committee Chairwoman Pauline Neville Jones said of the terror plot, which led to increased security at airports.
