MLB: San Diego 4, Washington 1

SAN DIEGO, Sept. 2 (UPI) -- Clayton Richard struck out six batters in 6 2/3 innings Tuesday to lead the San Diego Padres to a 4-1 win over the Washington Nationals.

Richard (4-1) held Washington to four hits and a pair of walks and Heath Bell set the Nats down in order in the ninth for his 33rd save.


Oscar Salazar had a pinch-hit home run for the Padres, who have won six of their last eight games.

Josh Bard homered in the top of the seventh for Washington's lone run. That cut San Diego's lead to 2-1, but then Salazar homered in the bottom of the inning and the Padres added an insurance run in the eighth on a pinch-hit RBI single by Drew Macias.

J.D. Martin (3-4) took the loss after giving up three runs on five hits in a six-inning start. He struck out five.
