Drug cartel lawyer slain in Mexico

TOLUCA, Mexico, Aug. 30 (UPI) -- Mexican authorities Sunday were investigating the slaying of a lawyer whose clients included major drug cartel figures, police said.

Officials said attorney Americo Delgado was ambushed and stabbed to death Friday evening by at least three men in Toluca, Mexico, the Los Angeles Times reported.

The newspaper said Delgado, believed to be 81, had defended such prominent drug trafficking figures at Tijuana crime boss Benjamin Arellano Felix and so-called methamphetamine king Jesus Amezcua. Delgado recently represented suspected drug cartel leader Alfredo Beltran Leyva of the northwestern state of Sinaloa, the Times said.

The attorney's slaying came only weeks after another lawyer for drug figures, Silvia Raquenel Villanueva of the northern city of Monterrey, was shot to death in an apparent execution-style attack at a market in the city, the newspaper reported.
