ANTIOCH, Calif., Aug. 28 (UPI) -- A California man says he recalls seeing young Jaycee Dugard through his backyard fence about the time she had been reported kidnapped.
Patrick McQuaid, 27, said he spoke to the blonde girl briefly through the wire fence his family shared with neighbor Phillip Garrido, who faced charges Friday that he kidnapped Jaycee in 1991.
Jaycee, now 29, was discovered still living with Garrido and his wife in Antioch this week.
The abduction in South Lake Tahoe triggered a massive search in the northern California region; however, McQuaid told the San Jose Mercury News his brief encounter at the fence didn't register much with him at the time.
"I didn't think anything of it," McQuaid said. "I was young."
McQuaid said the girl told him her name was Jaycee, but she was then hustled inside by Garrido and he never saw her again.
