Pirates fire at U.S. Navy helicopter

MOGADISHU, Somalia, Aug. 27 (UPI) -- The U.S. Navy said Thursday pirates aboard a commandeered ship off the coast of Somalia fired on one of its helicopters.

The Navy said the SH-60 helicopter wasn't hit during the Wednesday attack and no crew members were hurt, CNN reported.

The shooting occurred from the Taiwanese-flagged M/V Win Far, which Somali pirates have been using as a "mother ship" for attacks on other ships since they hijacked it in April, CNN said.

The Navy said in its release the helicopter's flight crew "noticed activity" on the ship but could not determine if they had been fired upon. However, upon returning to the USS Chancellorsville without returning fire, a review of its infrared camera showed the aircraft had been fired at.
