SACRAMENTO, Aug. 25 (UPI) -- A driver in Sacramento was shot to death when he repeatedly rammed into police cars trying to pull him over, police said Tuesday.

The Sacramento Bee reported California Highway Patrol officers attempted to stop the car driven by a man in his thirties for a suspected traffic violation, first by spinning his car during a high-speed chase.

"An officer broke out the driver's side window of the truck. They then used the Taser several times on the gentleman. He continued to try to escape and officers feared for their safety as the driver continued to ram them," CHP Officer Michael Bradley said.

There appeared to be some drug paraphernalia in the car, Bradley said.

"Drugs may have been a factor, whether it was possession or being under the influence," he said.

The man's name was not reported.
