Canadian boy hit by lightning dies

TORONTO, Aug. 22 (UPI) -- A 5-year-old Canadian boy who was one of three people struck by lightning on a soccer field has died, a spokeswoman for a Toronto hospital says.

Judy Noordermeer of Toronto's Hospital for Sick Children told the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. Kyus Caines died shortly after 8 p.m. Friday.

The boy, his mother Dulce, 26 and a 3-year-old friend were on a soccer field in Brampton, Ontario, Aug. 12 when they were hit by what one witness called a "fireball" as they were heading home ahead of an approaching storm, the CBC said.

His mother and friend were hospitalized but survived.
