No charges for driver who hit Girl Scouts

REDWOOD CITY, Calif., Aug. 20 (UPI) -- An attorney in San Mateo, Calif., who hit a group of Girl Scouts with his car will not face criminal charges, prosecutors say.

San Mateo County Deputy District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe said an investigation into the crash in Burlingame, Calif., found that Paul Glad, 59, accidentally stepped on the accelerator instead of the brake while trying to stop his vehicle, the San Mateo (Calif.) County Times said Wednesday.

Wagstaffe said since Glad apparently was not under the influence of drugs at the time of the March crash, he will not face criminal charges for the incident.

"We couldn't prove that (intoxication) was what caused him to lose control of the vehicle," said Wagstaffe, referring to Glad's admitted use of the painkiller OxyContin the day of the crash.

Burlingame resident Holly Rogers, 48, and her 8-year-old daughter were injured when Glad's car struck the group of Girl Scouts and their parents outside a local supermarket. The scouts were selling cookies outside the store when the crash occurred.

Rogers had a leg amputated as the result of her injuries, while her unidentified daughter suffered multiple leg fractures.

The County Times said while Glad will not face criminal charges for the crash, he is facing a lawsuit filed by the victims' family.
