Major ecstasy bust made in Canada

WINNIPEG, Manitoba, Aug. 20 (UPI) -- Two men have been charged in one of the largest seizures of the illicit drug ecstasy in Canadian history, police in Winnipeg, Manitoba, said.

At a news conference, police said 143 pounds of ecstasy were found in a vehicle stopped for speeding in the city on July 26, the Winnipeg Free Press reported Thursday.

Winnipeg Police Constable Jackie Chaput said after being cut down, the haul would have produced 650,000 tablets with a street value of at least $6.5 million.

"The seizure is definitely going to affect one (criminal) organization or more. It's a significant financial loss," she said. "We will definitely see a decline in the accessibility of drugs."

Two 32-year-old British Columbia men were arrested, granted bail and allowed to return home with travel restrictions, the newspaper said.

Chaput said caches of drugs of that size usually have links to organized crime. He rebuffed all questions at the news conference about circumstances surrounding the traffic stop, the Winnipeg Sun said.
