Protesters leave the top of Colosseum

ROME, Aug. 19 (UPI) -- Protesters who spent four days on top of the Colosseum in Rome came down but said they would stay around the landmark until they see salary guarantees.

Seven security guards came down from the top of the amphitheater Tuesday after local and national authorities promised to re-examine the impending privatization of their city-managed security company.

The security guards are insecure about their jobs and salaries and want the government to assure them they will not suffer under privatization, union representative Mario Frezza told the ANSA news service.

Rome's deputy mayor, Mauro Cutrufo, helped negotiate the seven down from the Colosseum, but admitted finding a solution that satisfied everyone would not be easy.

One of the seven, Giorgio Gori, said he had no regrets about staging a protest on top of Rome's most famous landmark and described the view as beautiful.
