Video of two FARC hostages released

BOGOTA, Aug. 18 (UPI) -- A video showing a Colombian police officer and a soldier has been released by the Marxist guerrillas who kidnapped them.

Both Police Maj. Guillermo Solorzano, who has been a hostage since June 2007, and Army Cpl. Salin Antonio San Miguel Valderrama, who was taken in May 2008, appear to be healthy on the video released Monday, CNN reported. Both men were taped making statements asking the government to negotiate with the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, usually known by its Spanish initials FARC.

"I have what I need. My captors have provided everything I need to live," San Miguel said. "I am in good spirits, my happiness has not left me, Mama, I am still strong, and hoping for freedom soon, for myself and for all my companions."

The videos were sent through a senator involved in trying to negotiate the release of 23 people believed to be held by the FARC, the BBC reported.

"I declaim to all those who have the power to make decisions, so that we can come back to life, to do something for us," Solorzano said.
