Panel: Woman was fired for being depressed

VANCOUVER, British Columbia, Aug. 17 (UPI) -- A Canadian woman who claimed she was fired from her job because she was depressed has been awarded nearly $25,000, officials say.

The British Columbia Human Rights Tribunal awarded the sum to Kimberley Bertrend, who said she was fired from her job as an environmental technician with Golder Associates because she was depressed for several weeks, the Vancouver Sun reported Monday.

Bertrend said one of her managers had said in discussions leading up to her dismissal she "cried a lot."

Tribunal officials said in their Aug. 13 decision the woman's discrimination claims were justified on the grounds of injuries to her dignity, feelings and self-respect, the Sun reported.

Bertrend reportedly testified she felt the sacrifices she had made to move to British Columbia from Ontario went for naught because of the unfair dismissal and said she had done nothing wrong.
