Elephant tramples French woman

CHENNAI, India, Aug. 14 (UPI) -- An elephant trampled a 66-year-old French woman in an Indian forest, killing her and injuring her son, authorities said.

The incident occurred in the Chandanamalai forests in the Nilgiris district in southern Tamil Nadu state, where the two were taking photographs, the Press Trust of India reported.

The two were attacked by both the elephant and its calf in the forests, authorities said.

The 39-year-old son suffered injuries to his leg and shoulders while his mother, who was trampled, died at the scene, the report said.

Officials said the two were staying at a private sanctuary resort and were on a sightseeing trip with two local guides.

The report said they went into the forest and were attacked. The guides escaped.
