Greece seizes cocaine, arrests 6

ATHENS, Greece, Aug. 12 (UPI) -- Greek police said they arrested six members of an international drug trafficking ring and seized 985 pounds of cocaine on a ship in the port of Piraeus.

A special anti-drug police team raided the ship, whose name and owners were not disclosed, while it was anchored in Piraeus and ready to set off from the Greek Aegean Sea to a Bulgarian Black Sea port, the Greek ERT television said Wednesday.

Five suspected smugglers were arrested in Athens and a sixth female ring member was detained in the northern Greek port town of Thessaloniki. Most of the suspects were Greek nationals.

The cocaine, wrapped in 400 packages and stashed inside the ship, was one of the biggest drug seizures ever in Greece, police said.

A police official said the anti-drug team acted on a tip received from U.S. authorities saying they suspected the ship was transporting the drug from Colombia.
