WASHINGTON, Aug. 11 (UPI) -- Republican political operative Karl Rove played a key part in the firing of New Mexico U.S. Attorney David Iglesias, a report said.

Rep. John Conyers, D-Mich., head of the House Judiciary Committee, released thousands of pages of documents from his investigation, Politico reported Tuesday. They include interviews with Rove and former White House Counsel Harriet Miers.

Conyers has been investigating allegations that the Bush administration dismissed nine U.S. attorneys for political reasons.

"After all the delay and despite all the obfuscation, lies and spin, this basic truth can no longer be denied: Karl Rove and his cohorts at the Bush White House were the driving force behind several of these firings, which were done for improper reasons," Conyers said.

Rove's lawyer, Robert Luskin, said there is no proof his client was involved in putting together a list of federal prosecutors to be fired. Luskin said it is old news that Rove passed on complaints about Iglesias to the Justice Department.
