SACRAMENTO, Aug. 10 (UPI) -- A Sacramento radio station's lawyers say they are dubious of claims of health and psychological problems caused by the station's 2007 water-drinking contest.
The radio station, KDND, is being sued by three contestants who claim their ordeal caused mood swings, weight gains of up to 60 pounds and even a fear of bottle water.
One other contestant died after drinking massive amounts of water in the ill-fated "Hold Your Wee for a Wii" contest that had a Wii game console as its prize.
"The timing of the plaintiffs' recent revelations of previously repressed (post-traumatic stress disorders) and new treatment, after over two years of no symptoms and no treatment, is at best suspicious," attorneys for KDND's parent company, Entercom, wrote in a recent court document.
The Sacramento (Calif.) Bee said the eventual winner of the contest, Lucy Davidson, said she was so traumatized by the events that she won't listen to the radio due to a fear of contests and shudders when she sees shoppers with bottled water in their carts at the Wal-Mart where she works.
The case is scheduled to go to trial Aug. 31.
KDND is also being sued for wrongful termination by an ex-program director who was among 10 station employees fired in the aftermath of the contest.
