LONDON, Aug. 9 (UPI) -- Strikes by British postal workers will affect more residents as the work stoppages spread to additional parts of the country, officials say.
Millions of homes and businesses will face mail delays as walkouts are set to spread this week from offices in Bristol, Peterborough and Edinburgh to East Anglia, the West Midlands and London, The Sunday Times of London reported.
"Royal Mail management is trying to crush the British postal service," Dave Ward, deputy general secretary of the Communication Workers Union, told the newspaper. "They have been criticized by government for failing to tackle industrial relations problems, yet they still refuse to address the concerns of postal workers."
The Sunday Times said strikes affecting 25,000 workers came after votes were taken at 200 Royal Mail facilities. All 160,000 members of the CWU nationwide will vote on strike plans next month, officials said.
"The CWU need to realize that customers have a choice and mail volumes are falling," Royal Mail spokesman David Simpson told the newspaper.
