WASHINGTON, Aug. 8 (UPI) -- Renowned U.S. physician-geneticist Dr. Francis Collins has been confirmed as the next director of the National Institutes of Health.
The senate confirmed Collins' nomination Friday before adjourning for its August recess.

"Dr. Collins is one of our generation's great scientific leaders," Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius said in a news release after the Senate vote.
Collins had served as director of the National Human Genome Research Institute, where he led the Human Genome Project.
"Dr. Collins will be an outstanding (NIH) leader," she said.
