New mom kidnapped by woman seeking baby

AUSTIN, Texas, Aug. 7 (UPI) -- A Texas woman who told friends she was pregnant is accused of kidnapping a new mother and her 2-week-old infant, Austin police say.

Margarita Nino, 40, is being held on two felony counts for allegedly abducting Blanca Zacarias, drugging her and planning to kill her so she could pass the woman's baby off as her own, the Austin (Texas) American-Statesman reported Friday.

Austin Police Cmdr. Julie O'Brien says Nino told friends the morning of the kidnapping that her baby was on the way.

Nino was headed to the Texas-Mexican border with Zacarias and the infant when she was stopped for speeding and given a ticket.

Zavala County sheriff's deputies let Nino drive on but detained Zacarias because she didn't have any identification documents.

Zacarias told authorities she had been drugged and didn't know where she was.

Nino was arrested in Austin Thursday.
