BANGKOK, Aug. 6 (UPI) -- The alleged arms dealer of the Tamil Tiger rebel group was arrested in Bangkok, a report on state television in Sri Lanka said Thursday.

Lankapuvath, the national news agency of Sri Lanka, reported Selvarasa Padmanathan, known as KP, was arrested, citing as its source, the Sri Lankan government information department. The news service called him the "self-appointed ... leader and chief arms dealer" of the Tamil Tigers.

The group was defeated by the Sri Lankan military this year after a 25-year war seeking an independent state for the minority Tamils.

At least 70,000 were killed in the civil war, CNN reported.

The Sri Lankan military killed the Tamil Tiger's longtime leader, Velupillai Prabhakaran, in the final days of the last offensive of the war. A published account said the remnants of the Tiger group, which is formally known as the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam, decided in July that Padmanathan would "lead us into the next steps of our freedom struggle."
