MONTREAL, Aug. 5 (UPI) -- A Canadian television news helicopter covering tornado damage crashed in western Quebec Wednesday, killing the pilot and a veteran cameraman.

The two-seater helicopter was assigned to gather aerial footage for CTV News of damage from a tornado that swept through the town of Mont-Laurier a day earlier, CTV said.

Pilot Roger Belangerm in his 60s, and CTV cameraman Hugh Haugland, 44, died in the crash, the broadcaster said.

The helicopter crashed near Highway 117 in the Laurentian mountains, about 150 miles northwest of Montreal, the report said.

Quebec news channel RDI aired a witness report saying the craft was burning so badly on impact, nothing could be done to rescue the two men.

There was no immediate indication of what caused the crash.

CTV issued a message of condolence to the families of the pilot and Haugland, who worked for the network for 24 years.

Tuesday's tornado that damaged more than 40 houses was reported to have caused only three minor injuries.
