MOUNT CLEMENS, Mich., Aug. 5 (UPI) -- The federal government will invest $30 million into a proposed security hub at Selfridge Air National Guard Base in Macomb County, Mich., officials say.
U.S. Rep. Candice Miller, R-Mich., said the federal funds will be used to create a first-of-its-kind intelligence operations center at the Michigan site that will help share information between top federal, state and Canadian authorities, The Detroit News said Wednesday.
"They will gather information and intelligence and analyze it and get it in the hands of the brave men and women securing our border," Miller said.
Miller added the creation of the center will likely only create a few new jobs, but local officials say numerous other positions could be created if the military base becomes a national security headquarters.
Paul Gieleghem, Macomb County Board of Commissioners chairman, praised the federal government's decision to invest funds in Selfridge.
"(The announcement) is a big win for Macomb County and the region. It positions us to become a hub for homeland security," he told the Detroit News.
