Bomb threat interrupts synagogue wedding

LONG BRANCH, N.J., Aug. 5 (UPI) -- A bomb threat interrupted a wedding at a synagogue on the Jersey Shore in an area of New Jersey at the center of recent corruption arrests.

About 300 people were evacuated Tuesday evening from Obel Simcha in Long Branch, the New York Daily News reported Wednesday.

"The wedding went on like nothing happened," said a neighbor who did not want his name used. "It went from the parking lot to the street, the celebration continued."

A threat was also made against a synagogue in neighboring Deal, N.J., an upscale town that is home to a large Syrian Jewish community. Solomon Dwek, who spent two years as an FBI informant after being charged with bank fraud, is the son of a former rabbi of the Deal congregation.

Dwek's work led to the arrest in July of three New Jersey mayors and two state legislators. Five rabbis were also charged.

Avi Aboud, captain of Hatzoloh Ambulance, Jersey Shore Division, helped evacuate the 300 wedding guests.

"Apparently, it is a phone call threat," he told the News. "Police said they traced the number back to somewhere in the Midwest."
