DETROIT, Aug. 4 (UPI) -- An aide to former Detroit Councilwoman Monica Conyers was taped by the FBI making more than 20,000 phone calls, his attorney says.
Attorney David Steingold revealed in U.S. District Court Monday that federal investigators intercepted thousands of calls made by political consultant Sam Riddle as part of a corruption probe of alleged shakedowns while Riddle served as a top aide to Conyers, wife of U.S. Rep John Conyers, D-Mich., The Detroit News reported.
Riddle and former state Rep. Mary Waters are preparing to stand trial on charges they bribed a Southfield, Mich., city councilman with cash and luxury goods obtained from pawn shop that was seeking approval to relocate within the suburban Detroit community, the newspaper said.
Steingold told reporters outside the courtroom of U.S. District Judge Marianne Battani that he would seek the FBI transcripts of each of the calls, saying, "We intend to go over every line of every call. I don't care if it's someone ordering pizza."
Some of the intercepted calls relate to a second, much larger extortion case in which Riddle is charged but Waters is not, the News said.
