PITTSBURGH, Aug. 4 (UPI) -- A man opened fire in a Pittsburgh-area health club Tuesday evening, killing five women and wounding many others, before taking his own life, police said.
Witnesses told WTAE-TV, Pittsburgh, the gunman came into a Latin dance class at the L.A. Fitness Center in Collier, turned off the lights and began shooting. One woman described him as a middle-aged white man carrying a large gym bag.
Stacey Falk of Bridgeville told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette she was in an aerobics room when she saw the man shortly after 8 p.m.
"Girls were just ducking behind each other. All I could hear were gunshots and girls screaming, screaming. Girls were running into each other. We were using each other for protection," she said. "There was blood on the floor and casings all over the place. I didn't know it was real until I saw the casings on the floor."
Four of the victims were killed at the scene and a fifth died in a hospital, KDKA-TV reported. Eleven people were taken to hospitals and five were reportedly in critical condition.
Police said the man apparently walked in through a back door.
