LOS ANGELES, Aug. 3 (UPI) -- CNN will not run an ad criticizing its program, "Lou Dobbs Tonight," for reporting on challenges to President Barack Obama's U.S. citizenship, the network said.

Media Matters, an online media watchdog, had announced a purchase of airtime on CNN to run an ad urging viewers to pressure the news channel on the issue. Dobbs has said he believes Obama is a citizen but the president should do more to satisfy those who claim he is not.

The Media Matters ad was scheduled to run beginning Tuesday in New York, Atlanta and Washington, including during "Lou Dobbs Tonight," the Los Angeles Times reported. However, the newspaper said, CNN issued a statement Monday saying it would not air the ad.

"CNN retains the right to object to any ad run by the cable operator on our network whose purpose is to attack CNN or our employees," the statement said.

Most major cable providers subsequently said they would decline to run the ad during CNN programming, the Times reported. Plans still called for the ad to air on Fox News Channel and MSNBC in New York, Atlanta and Washington, the report said.
