Ukraine uncovers journalist's skull pieces

KIEV, Ukraine, July 28 (UPI) -- Ukrainian investigators say they suspect skull pieces found near the capital Kiev might belong to journalist Georgiy Gongadze, beheaded nine years ago.

The death case of Gongadze, an investigative reporter specializing in corruption, surfaced to the public attention July 21 when former police Gen. Oleksiy Pukach was arrested on suspicion he had organized surveillance of Gongadze, then kidnapped and strangled the journalist in September 2000, the Ukrinform news agency said.

Gongadze's decapitated body was found later in the woods outside Kiev.

Kiev prosecutors Friday charged Pukach with complicity in the slaying of Gongadze.
